Apollo infrared reflectography uncovers underdrawing details and compositional revisions beneath one of the most celebrated portraits of the Medici court.
Painted around 1544–1545 by Agnolo di Cosimo, known as Bronzino, the Portrait of Eleonora di Toledo and her son Giovanni is among the most iconic images of 16th-century Florentine court portraiture. Infrared reflectography conducted with the Apollo camera revealed a remarkably refined underdrawing and significant changes in the composition, offering a new perspective on the artist’s creative process.
Preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the infrared examination of the portrait proved particularly effective in visualizing carbon-based preparatory materials beneath the paint layers. The lines identified are notably associated with the decorative pattern of Eleonora’s costume, as well as exposing several pentimenti that document adjustments made during the painting process.

Within the context of Florentine Mannerism, portraiture was not primarily concerned with naturalistic representation, but with the construction of controlled, idealised images of power, lineage, and stability. Bronzino’s approach reflects this shift through a highly refined pictorial system characterised by emotional restraint, polished surfaces, and deliberate compositional stillness.
Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I, is depicted alongside her son Giovanni in a carefully staged composition that underscores dynastic continuity. Rather than functioning as a domestic portrait, the work operates as an instrument of political representation, in which maternal presence, aristocratic decorum, and hereditary succession are visually consolidated into a single, highly-regulated image of Medici legitimacy.
The flesh tones are smooth and compact, modelled with extreme subtlety through the application of thin, superimposed glazes over a light ground, producing an enamel-like finish. The brocade is rendered with exceptional precision through a nuanced interplay of deep blacks, warm browns, and luminous highlights, without recourse to overt metallic effects. The blue background, applied with deliberate uniformity, isolates the figures and reinforces their sculptural presence.

Infrared reflectography conducted with the Apollo imaging system reveals a coherent underdrawing, executed in a carbon-based medium. The drawing is particularly evident in the structural definition of ornamental elements, including the pearl necklace and the intricate decorative network across Eleonora’s bodice, forming a precise jeweled framework beneath the painted surface.
The examination further identifies a series of compositional adjustments, or pentimenti, indicating an active refinement process during execution. Minor modifications are visible in the positioning of Eleonora’s shoulders and hand, suggesting subtle recalibration of posture to achieve greater compositional balance.
More significantly, the figure of Giovanni shows evidence of a substantial alteration. Initial compositional stages indicate a more animated interaction with his mother’s dress, with the child originally depicted grasping the fabric. In the final painted version, this gesture was suppressed in favour of a more restrained and formally aligned posture, consistent with the broader iconographic objective of emphasizing dynastic stability and ceremonial control.

What the Apollo camera reveals beneath Bronzino’s surface is a record of decisions about posture, gesture, and symbolic weight, made and revised in the pursuit of a precise image. Infrared reflectography by Apollo has made this kind of evidence legible once again. The suppressed gesture of Giovanni shows us that a single compositional change can speak directly to the ideological intentions of the work.
