SUMMARY:International Conference Florence Heri-Tech
DESCRIPTION:Opus Instruments\nHello friends of Opus! We are beyond excited to announce that next week we will be present at the International Conference Florence Heri-Tech inside the Fortezza da Basso. \nOpus Instrument’s is attending as a sponsor and our company representative Hannah Conway-Laws will be exhibiting and presenting on our behalf. We will be available to talk all things IR reflectography along with a deep-dive into our recent case studies\, and a special announcement! \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nAbout the conference\n“The International Conference Florence Heri-tech: the Future of Heritage Science and Technologies\, involves a large number of researches and scholars from around the world and puts the industry’s current issues under spotlight\, specifically on issues related to innovative techniques and technologies for Cultural Heritage. The Conference is part of the Florence International Biennial for Art and Restoration\, an international event attracting prestigious institutions and companies and creating a unique opportunity to bring together the academic word with industry. The Conference will be a significant opportunity to bring together the academic world with industry. \nHeri-Tech is the first International Conference to welcome major researchers and scholars from all over the world\, focusing on current and future issues in the field on issues related to innovative techniques and technologies. The city of Florence will therefore be the international heart of Restoration and Cultural and Environmental assets as well as a forum for meeting and discussing for experts\, operators and enthusiasts from around the world. The Conference will be a significant opportunity for exchange between researchers and companies for the promotion of productive excellence\, technological evolution\, the greater use of culture for younger sections of the population and specialization in the educational field for graduates and PhD students.” \n“The final objectives are: \nTo foster European mobility and co-operation between students and staff; to enhance Europe’s development as a multi-cultural society and to encourage the concept that scientific-cultural research must be an integral part of society; to promote international networks between universities\, training institutes and companies to create long-term collaboration opportunities; to create favourable conditions for young graduates to enter the world of work; to demonstrate the influence of new technologies in the arts and how they can be used for innovative teaching and learning; and to establish contacts and cooperation between Institutions in the Academic world and the world of work.”

SUMMARY:Opus proudlly sponsors: XXIInd Symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting
DESCRIPTION:‘Alla Maniera’\nTechnical art history and the meaning of style in 15th to 17th century painting \nEver since 15th and early 16th century writers used the word maniera to describe an artist’s personal style\, the term has known many ambivalent meanings. Alla maniera di … implied the deliberate and eclectic imitation of someone else’s style (for example that of Raphael or Michelangelo) and also offered the possibility that an artist had more than one maniera at his or her disposal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis ambivalence presents a challenge for stylistic analysis which has always been an important art historical tool for dating\, situating and attributing works of art. For painting\, this has traditionally been limited to the surface appearance but technical examination and scientific analysis now reveal additional layers of information that may offer a better and even different understanding of style. Infrared photography and reflectography can reveal underdrawing and offer insights on technique and working methods. Imagery and analysis often bring to light more details on the development of the composition\, the paint layer structure and materials used. Recent developments in artificial intelligence may offer alternative perspectives on these questions. \nThe symposium focusses on how technical research can provide additional insights or challenges concerning the style of an individual painter\, a workshop or a group of painters. Stylistic similarities might indicate cultural\, social\, geographical or chronological connections in paintings\, drawings\, prints\, applied arts\, etc. as well as across artistic media. \nThe language of the symposium is English. The papers will be published by Peeters Publishers. \n\nThe organisers\n\nThe international and interdisciplinary biennial ‘Symposium for the Study of Underdrawing and Technology in Painting’ is alternately organised by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (Brussels)\, its Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives\, Illuminare (Centre for the Study of Medieval Art\, KU Leuven)\, UCL (Louvain-la-Neuve) and Musea Brugge and its Flemish research center for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands. \n\nThe scientific committee\n\n\nTill-Holger Borchert (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\nChristina Currie (KIK/IRPA)\nAnne Dubois (UCL)\nBart Fransen (KIK/IRPA)\nVanessa Paumen (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\nGuenevere Souffreau (Musea Brugge)\nJan Van der Stock (KU Leuven)\nAnne van Oosterwijk (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\nDominique Vanwijnsberghe (KIK/IRPA)\nLieve Watteeuw (KU Leuven)\nHonorary member: Hélène Verougstraete (Emeritus Professor\, UCL)\n\nOrganising committee \n\nTill-Holger Borchert (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\nAnne Dubois (UCL)\nMarijn Everaarts (Musea Brugge)\nVanessa Paumen (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\nEllen Pollet (Musea Brugge)\nGuenevere Souffreau (Musea Brugge)\nAnne van Oosterwijk (Musea Brugge\, Flemish research centre for the arts in the Burgundian Netherlands)\n\n\n\nVisit the event website here.

SUMMARY:The British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers (BAPCR) ‘Tales of The Unexpected’ – 31/01/2020
DESCRIPTION:About the event: \nThe BAPCR (British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers) is pleased to announce their forthcoming conference in January 2020: ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ in Conservation. \nIt is not unusual\, in the course of conservation\, for new and unexpected discoveries about a painting to be made\, sometimes uncovering material aspects which are atypical to an artist or period. The conservator\, by virtue of his/her experience and prolonged proximity to the painting\, is ideally placed to make this kind of observation. It could be the case of an unorthodox support or priming\, or the surprising use of a pigment\, medium\, or coating. Or\, it may become apparent that a painting has been compromised by non-original materials\, coatings or additions applied by an earlier conservator/restorer. Some discoveries have significant art historical and ethical implications\, whilst also presenting considerable conservation challenges. \nTechnical analysis frequently plays an important role in these situations\, especially in a museum setting. Imaging techniques\, and most recently scanning XRF mapping\, might help to reveal and explain the presence of unexpected layers\, or reveal changes in composition and artists’ reworkings. Scientific analysis can likewise help to characterise the materials involved and inform conservation treatments. \nConservation treatments (strategies\, materials and equipment) might need to be refined\, or completely rethought\, in the light of discoveries about unusual materials or a previous restoration. Collaboration with art historians\, heritage professionals\, stakeholders or even the artists themselves may be invaluable in arriving at appropriate ethical decisions.
